10,000 years of stories from Cape Breton’s Heritage Coast

Imagine a land of tall forests stretched between ocean and inland sea. Imagine the Mi’kmaw people traveling from place to place through the year harvesting the abundant plants, animals and fish found here.
Imagine an ocean crossing from France or Scotland to this spectacular land, a beacon to both enterprising merchants and determined settlers. There are new friendships to be made, stories to be shared, sorrows to commemorate, mysteries to contemplate and triumphs to celebrate.

Imagine yourself in this place, long long before the sound of a cellphone, radio, i-Pod, or television, paddling a canoe, on a headland rich with blueberries overlooking a sparkling sea, resting around a campfire after a feast. An elder speaks:
A’tukwey…. “I’m telling a story.”

A’tukwey : (ah doog way) - An act or action whereby an individual tells a story using whatever means to tell the story. Through verse, story, play, dance or music.

Welcome! All of these stories are still here in Richmond County, waiting to be discovered, honored and handed on to you. Come visit us and experience the wealth created by our cultures, Mi’kmaw, Acadian and Gaelic. Feast with us on traditional cuisine, raise your
spirits at the sound of our songs, and hear it like it was, still alive today in Richmond County, on Cape Breton’s Heritage Coast.
